Absinthe is an anise-flavored spirit whose popularity grew in the 1840s, when it was given to French troops in Algeria as a malaria preventive. It became so popular in bars and bistros that the hour of 5 pm was called l'heure verte ("the green hour"). At its height 36 million litres a year were produced in France. But unlike other alcohols, absinthe contains thujone, which has hallucinogenic properties, drinking it awakens the senses in a way that other spirits cannot. Perhaps the lecherous gentleman in our poster says it all! Absinthe's alcohol content is so high and its flavor is so powerful that it was eventually banned in France.
