The quintessential French cigarettes, Gitanes exude the exotic aroma of Caporal tobacco. The brand was launched in 1910 in four different versions, all of which were filterless. In the 1930s, the first graphic ads for Gitanes appeared. In honour of the name, the packet shows the silhouette of a Spanish gypsy woman playing the tambourine. In the 1958 French film Ascender pour l’échafaud Julien Tavernier smokes Gitanes in several scenes to the cool jazz of Miles Davis. In the 1981 French thriller Diva, Jules is befriended by a mysterious bohemian, Gorodish, who constantly smokes Gitanes. Even the colours used in the set were picked to complement the colours of the Gitane packets. In July 2016, the French government considered a ban on both the Gitanes and Gauloises cigarette brands because they were deemed "too stylish and cool".
